Where's the Innkeeper? A Closer Look at What Is—and What’s Not—in the Biblical Stories of Jesus’ Birth

December 4, 2019 - 6:30pm to 8:00pm

Matthew has the wise men, an evil King Herod, and an angel appearing to Joseph; Luke the shepherds, the manger, and an angel appearing to Mary. As it turns out, our familiar Christmas story is a mash-up of different versions of the nativity. As Advent begins, join Gregory Mobley of Yale Divinity School for a close look at the two — the only two; Mark and John do not mention it — biblical accounts of Jesus’ birth, in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. Plus, we will also look at the renegade “Gospel of James,” which though it was never accepted as scripture gave our pageants one of its most popular creatures, the Christmas donkey
